A cheeky and fantastical guide to ultimately remind one not to touch their face I wish I could do more to help people directly, but as a storyteller, I can only use the skills I have. Aside from actually reminding people not to touch their face when out in the world, I wanted to bring some levity to this absurd and awful situation. As laughter is not the BEST medicine, in this case, it is a good one. The idea for this came about when Covid really started picking up in New York, but before any sort of measures were taken. Experts were talking about how touching your face is the main way of transmission, and then realizing how often I touched my own face. I started thinking about classical conditioning and other ways to alter behavior, and then some other, less practical solutions came to mind. I have a version sized for Instagram as well that I will submit seperately

At the time of the Windrush scandal Darren Smith (writer of this poem) interviewed Sachini’s (producer of the poem) mum, who came to Britain to work in the NHS. It seemed incredible that we could go from a nation that needs and welcomes and values immigrants to a nation riven apart by Brexit and the Hostile Environment policies of the government since 2012.

The coronavirus pandemic has seen a much-deserved shift in the what we now think of as an ‘essential key worker’. Ironically, despite being socially distanced from one another we are a far more United Kingdom.

As our friends and neighbours do each Thursday night at 8pm we clap for every carer, doctor, nurse, delivery driver, supermarket employee, dentist, refuse collector, food bank volunteer and key worker no matter what their age, sex, religion, nationality, or colour of their skin.

We are not trying to make a political point. It is a humanitarian one.

When we emerge from our homes blinking in the sunlight and hopefully freed from the grip of COVID-19, we want to remind people not to go back to old, blind ways of thinking. Of assuming that certain jobs are ‘unskilled’ and therefore ‘unworthy’.

And we ask everyone to remember that we are stronger as a nation when we welcome people of all ethnicities and backgrounds to our shores to work and live and love alongside us.

Because as we have discovered, at times of crisis we all need to support and care for each other.

That is a sentiment worth clapping for.
